I'm not optimistic that Mr Murphy is a person who would let facts change their opinion but here goes. When I was younger we had a family dog who had to have an operation for an intestinal blockage from something she ate while we were out walking. The vet advised that an similar incident would probably be fatal and that we should always muzzle her when out. Despite trying numerous different types of muzzle she never accepted it and was always trying to get it off. She would often come back with her face scratched have tried to knock the muzzle off by rubbing it into the ground. Having never been a danger to anyone she became a bit of a menace when out because she would often bump into people to try and knock the muzzle off. She was a big dog and this could be quite dangerous for elderly people so we often had to put her on the lead. Of course we recognised that this was minor price to pay for the relative piece of mind of knowing that you could let her run off more than 30 yards or more. Without the muzzle there would always be the concern that she would eat something that would kill her. Muzzling made her unhappy and more of a danger to other people but there was a good reason for doing it. General muzzling of all dogs would be a daft counterproductive idea which is probably why it has never been done anywhere. |
