For 4G data coverage EE are very hard to beat,

For voice 3 are patchy the rest are much of a muchness.

I would no avoid contracts like the  plague if you have a phone you like. The cost of the phone is rolled into the contract and it is often cheaper, if you don't want the 'bells and whistles' to buy a SIM free phone enabling you to switch networks at will.

Look instead at the 'virtual' operators like Virgin or giffgaff who have consistently lower rates in the UK (as example if you and a partner are both on giffgaff all calls between you are free).

Happy to give you a giffgaff SIM if you would like to try them out (they run on O2) - the only problem I have had is in rural west Wales where the service was poor - then again it was non existent on EE,
