The Local Conservative Association will not "drop" Mary Macleod - that is not how the system works. Candidates are selected to fight individual election campaigns and do not continue in post in perpetuity. "Win or lose" following an election your candidate ceases to be your candidate. If they win they are your MP and if they lose they are your ex-candidate. A successful candidate i.e. a sitting MP still has to be re-adopted as a candidate by his/her local Association if they wish to run in the next election. A candidate who loses but wishes to run again must be re-selected by the local Association. Re-selection is not automatic even for a sitting MP. This is a tried and tested process that puts the power of candidate selection (within certain limits) in the hands of the paid up members of the Association. The process recognises that it takes "two to tango" i.e. a willing candidate and a willing Association. |
