These things are always tricky. If you only think back as far as 1979, then it is quite understandable why PC would have had to hold his nose to shake hands with Gerry Adams. But if you extend the historical perspective back as far as 1649-1653, things are not quite so clear cut. Over a longer perspective, neither England nor Ireland come out of the whole story whiter than white, so against that broader backdrop it was probably right for the two men to shake hands. It's just that one side only remembers back for 100 years or so, whilst the other side remembers 400 years of history. |
