Agreed Phil, I'm sure people knew it would be close here and there would have been a lot of tactical voting for both Tories and Labour. I think the problem is worse nowadays because there are credible third, fourth and fifth parties standing in each consituency - this means that a simple majority could be won with just over a fifth of the votes. In the old days when it was basically Lab vs Tory with the Liberals on the side many MP were actually voted in by a majority of the local vote, and so the party with a majority in parliament really did have the majority of the vote. I do admit this is guesswork though. |
