Katrina's advice is the best here – by a country mile. Lovely idea Katrina. Yes – you CAN grow some clematis in the shade, particularly the evergreen varieties like Armandii. But they tend to be 'leggy' and sparse. The critical factor about the perfect clematis (including ALL the Viticellas and various species) is to plant their roots in the shade (under a patio is ideal -NOT in a pot) but allowing it's head to find full sunshine. Too much shade and they simply don't do the business. Montana's a possibility.. but usually far far too big for any small town garden Re the rose idea – not good. I've had a few Alfred Carrieres over the years – they love climbing trees etc - but they'll NEVER cover a fence even if you force them into an espalier. They can do 30' easily. Follow Katrina.. |
