Another Scottish election in May 2016. But run on a fairer method so more representative than the unfair UK system. The Scottish Parliament uses an Additional Members System, designed to produce approximate proportional representation for each region. There are 8 regions, each sub-divided into smaller constituencies. There are a total of 73 constituencies. Each constituency elects one MSP by the plurality (first past the post) system of election. Each region elects 7 additional MSPs using an additional member system. A modified D'Hondt method, using the constituency results, is used to elect these additional MSPs Should be an interesting contest with floods of Conservative and Unionist candidates sweeping into power. Remember 1992 Before that election, John Major repeatedly pledged to cut taxes: in his manifesto, at almost every press conference, during interviews, and on his soapbox. He broke his word. There were twenty-two Tory tax increases during his administration costing a typical family over £2,000 in extra tax. |
