It is a bit frustrating to have such an ambiguous statement issued on the eve of an election on such an important issue. I'm not really sure what the situation is in Ealing but on Charing Cross my understanding is as follows. The NHS report on the current building deemed it 'not fit for purpose' and recommended that it be demolished and replaced by a new smaller facility. Part of the site would be sold for housing which would go back into the capital budget to pay for the rebuilding and to fund other facilities elsewhere. Because the replacement hospital is smaller it wouldn't take 'blue-light' emergency admissions i.e. cases in which the condition of the patient was critical. On the other hand Charing Cross would start to take paediatric admissions. If Labour are now saying they are not going to implement this plan on what grounds are they disputing the conclusion of the original report that Charing Cross needed to be redeveloped? |
