It might end up being quite painful for Brentford if they did go up. Warburton is probably the most multi-talented manager in any of the English divisions and along with Arsene Wenger is the best equipped to understand the relationship between the financial side of the game and what goes on on the pitch.

He seems to be so doubtful about the systems that Matthew Benham has in place that he was willing to give up a job he was clearly well suited to rather than accept a secondary role in player recruitment. It may be that Brentford really have worked out the secret formula for buying and selling players or it could be that Warburton's coaching ability was the main reason for the success.

If it is the latter and Brentford go into the premiership with a coach whose main characteristic has to be his pliability and the statistical models used to recruit players prove to be hocus pocus it could be a bit of an embarrassing season. That said the TV money and the parachute payments would provide a good financial base for a more sustainable push for the premier league just in time for the stadium to be finished.
