Seizures can occur with all sorts of poisoning and do not mean that a dog is "epileptic" or will be on permanent medication. Idiopathic epilepsy can result also in one-off seizures that never recur. Unfortunately there are many things in the environment that can be toxic to dogs, some naturally ocurring such a fungus and others due to people discarding litter, food waste or carelessly baiting for vermin. There have also been several cases in London and probably elsewhere where dogs have been poisoned by discarded "recreational" drugs and e-cigarettes are highly toxic. There are problems in various woodlands across the country that have caused fatalities and are possibly due to a strain of e-Coli. The best that owners can do is to be vigilent, train a solid "leave it" command and reinforce it regularly and yes, muzzle a dog if it scavenges. A muzzled dog is better than a dead dog. Thinking of poor Barney, a delightful little chap, and of course Lorraine and Fifi. |
