Between 2006 and 2010 when a Conservative Coalition was running Hounslow we cleared out much of the dross, incompetence and feather bedding created by Labour over previous decades. There was lots more to do. There were major problems in the area of Leisure Services arising from its ridiculously convoluted management structure and ineffective corporate governance. The nettle was grasped and firmly dealt with. But all of this took time. From a standing start (well jogging lightly on the spot) permanent savings of over £60m were made allowing the council tax to be frozen for the first time in decades. Funds were also redirected to Cinderella services. If re-elected in 2010 Hounslow Homes was firmly in our "cross-hairs". Many councils had got rid of their direct responsibilities for housing years ago and we wished to examine all the options. For Labour this was never an option and a renewal of the Hounslow Homes contract in 2012 was a foregone conclusion for them. Ruth Cadbury was at the heart of Labour's opposition to the Conservative strategy in 2006-2010 making extravagant claims about how services and quality would suffer - none of which actually happened. Now the re-badged Hounslow Homes has been brought back in house. Hands up those who think that is a good idea? |
