Julian - I understand your concerns and there are a number of common misunderstandings about the use of personal data by political canvassers.

Canvassers will be using data that is publically available from the electoral register. The process of canvassing enables the Parties to identify who is likely to support them at an election and who is not. This allows some deliveries of literature and the "knocking-up" on election day to be targeted where it will be most beneficial.

Tellers sitting outside polling stations will ask for your poll card number. If you provide this information this can then be matched with the information accumulated from canvassing. Volunteers can then "knock-up" those who when canvassed pledged support but who appear not yet to have voted.

It should be emphasised that none of all this effort on the part of the political parties will tell them who you actually voted for.

In many places the practice of telling at polling stations has fallen out of favour. There are simply too few volunteers to man/women every polling station from dawn until dusk. Knockers-up are therefore forced to knock up all their pledged supporters since they do not know if they have voted or not.

It is traditional not to canvass on a Sunday but the temptation is very great for activist in a marginal constituency who have failed to put in the necessary hard work in the weeks and months before an election.
