This is a commonly known problem and difficult when dogs scavenge and people discard food waste in public places. However, it is also worth remembering that many people feed their dogs food intended for human consumption without considering the consequences. Teach your dog a "leave it" cue and reinforce it at regular intervals. Do not feed your dog food intended for human consumption other than a few suitable vegetables (carrots and broccoli for instance) as a treat. Never feed anyone else's dog without asking permission. The use of artificial sweeteners in human food is a discrete issue that is separate from taking reponsibility for training and monitoring pets and feeding them a suitable, balanced diet. Calling for a ban on things that are toxic to dogs for instance would mean that no one could eat onions or grapes. I personally avoid artifical sweeteners as I think that there may cause health problems for humans and I find them unpleasant. I feel the same way about artifical butter. |
