Richard, the tube might be more regular from Heathrow but the journey time will be much reduced if you are travelling to Central London or the City so a significant proportion of air travellers are likely to switch. The impact of on crowding on the Piccadilly line is likely to be significant because it will not the number of people that will be reduced but their bags as well which can take up more space and reduce the effective capacity of carriages. Ultimately a lot will depend on the way passengers are directed at the airport - if they are encouraged to use Crossrail then overcrowding on the Piccadilly line would fall dramatically and every train would be like a Rayners Lane train is now. Any commitment made on an upgrade may indeed be a political stunt but that doesn't mean it isn't going to happen. |
