| Mary confessed that she had little direct knowledge of Defence matters when first elected and subsequently chose to spend some time over the last five years with the RAF in order to broaden her understanding of this vital area. Few present day MPS have served in the military (unlike in previous generations) and many people thinks that this has a contributed too poor decision taking on matters of national defence by members of Governments of all political hues. I cannot speak for Mary but from my time, long ago, auditing British Aerospace I know that Raytheon did supply the British Military with specialist missile technology etc. I suspect that it still does. Ruth Cadbury, the Labour Candidate, has publically acknowledged her Quaker faith and its pacifist tradition and one can draw one's own conclusions from that. It is not at all clear whether or not Ruth would support the commissioning of a replacement for the ageing Trident deterrent. From what I can make out - she would not. Nor is it clear that she supports her party leader's new found enthusiasm for matters military. |
