My preference would be to start on the north bank via Dukes Meadows, Chiswick Pier (lifeboat station) and Chiswick Mall.  Cross Hammersmith Bridge and walk along the south bank.  This avoids the diversions away from the river on the north bank.

If you're at Putney around 5pm today, you may see the high tide encroaching on to the road by the rowing clubs on the Embankment.

(You'll see from the "now" page that the Barrier is currently closed.  That's a planned test closure which is only for this morning, and won't affect this afternoon's high tide.)
