So sad.  And I know I will get flack for this but if you don't want your cat to get run over, don't let it wander.  Would you let any other animal, or child, wander?  Millions of cats are killed by cars every year.  If you want a cat, it needs outside space, but it doesn't have to be unlimited.  If you only have a balcony, fence it in.  My garden is catproofed, and I sleep at night because of that,  and they have a lovely time in the gsrden during the day.  I am very well aware there are different points of view on this, and I feel very sorry for people who have lost their cats - but I have even more sympathy for the dead cats who could have enjoyed life for many more years.  If you can catproof your garden - and most people can - don't be mean, forgo the long weekend away and catproof your garden instead.  Both you and puss will enjoy each others' company for many years ahead.
