As a "young person" I was told that the place name Marylebone derived from that of ancient church, long since demolished, called in the Norman-French style Sainte Marie La Bonne. Saxon and Celts love to mangle words originating in the French language presumably once upon a time just to annoy our Francophone overlords. The "bois" in Chesham Bois and Theydon Bois is always pronounced as "boys" by the locals. The very word cockney is said to derive from the French word for a Cock's Egg i.e. originally a French speaker's insult for London's opinionated, and eccentric inhabitants. So no change there. |
