| Clockwork Orange was written in 1962. Burgess lived in Glebe Street with his first wife Lynne from 1964-68. During these years he was working on his unpublished masterpiece A Clockwork Doris. A Clockwork Doris employs disturbing, violent images to comment on pet owning, wheelie bin delinquency, middle aged feminist gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian near-future Chiswick. Pope Doris, the main character, is a sociopathic whose interests include hedge trimming and fine dining in CHR brasseries. She leads a small gang of nags (Doris 2 Doris 3 Doris 4 and Doris 5, whom she calls her Dorises -from the Russian друг, "friend," "buddy"). The book chronicles the mundane activities of her crew, her capture by O'Brien in Chiswick House Grounds, and her attempted rehabilitation via controversial psychological hair conditioning. The author narrates most of the book in petspeak, a fractured middle class slang composed of barking, meeowing, and quotes from the Daily Mail.. (from Wikipedia).. |
