I've read through about half of this thread and don't have time to read the rest, so apologies if the following point has already been discussed. As a regular afternoon shopper in Chiswick and other west London town centres, I've noticed not only lone laptop users but small official-looking business meetings too, ie. one participant will have the laptop, the other two (or even three) will have files, markers, 'phones etc. while all sip coffees. They speak in lowered tones, heads together, so you can never work out what their business is. I've always assumed that this must be with the agreement of the cafe owner and that they've paid a small 'rental' for their one hour plus approx. occupation while only buying single coffees. It's actually quite a good idea and rather civilised if it works, but sometimes it doesn't (ie when there's flotilla of buggies, nannies and wailing babies nearby). PS: I think I've even spotted obvious job interviews taking place too. |
