You are right, the spec of original iPhone was nothing special apart from the "ooh" factor of being Apple. Nokia were way ahead of them at the time, yet 8 years later Apple are market leaders and Nokia no longer exist. Apart from having an iPod, I remained Apple free until I joined my current company a couple of years ago, when I was presented with an iPhone, the 4S was ok, the 5 annoyed the hell out of me because the battery life was so rubbish, but we moved onto the 6+ a few months ago, and that is the first one I've had which I feel justifies (most) of the hype. The battery life is excellent for such a large phone, I can get on a train to London, work on email, whilst listening to music, and reading a book on the kindle app. The other thing they do is work seamlessly together, texts emails etc. on my phone are replicated in my iPad, both of them have an app that allows you to track or remotely disable the other if lost/stolen. I'm by no means a worshipper at the shrine of Jobs, in fact I'm a late and rather reluctant convert to the world of Apple, but what they are very good at is taking existing tech and making it work and integrate seamlessly.
