Although I do not personally frequent M&S I think it is unfair that they are singled out for criticism in this thread.

Did the OP ask HSBC, Barclays, or Nat West for a contribution towards food? If not, why not?

In my experience businesses that contribute to charitable collections rarely seek publicity for their generosity. If they decline on occasion they should not be subject to adverse publicity, especially if others have not been asked to contribute.
