I can't speak for the Chiswick branch of M&S, but I suspect a nationwide company like them would have a fairly standard policy when it comes to out of date food. The Uxbridge branch, I know for certain, have their out of date food collected every evening by a van.The food is taken to a distribution point where it is shared out between the local homeless charities. The van will collect the food after the store closes. They are never allowed onto the loading bay while the store is open. The warehouse manager wheels the food out on a trolley. It is all sorted out into bread trays, and each one is itemised, ie, meat, vegetables, bread and cakes etc.The driver also returns the empty trays when he collects the food.M&S has this collection arrangement to stop people raking through their bins and skips looking for food. The loading b a y carries a sign informing people that no food is thrown away in the skips.Over the course of a year M&S donate a huge amount of food to the homeless. |
