It's clearly delusional to think that legalising milder strains of cannabis would do anything but increase use of stronger illegal strains amongst children. For many teenage boys the flirting with the criminal classes and the element of risk is part of the attraction. Decriminalising some types of cannabis weakens the line that most parents and teachers can now take which is 'don't do it, it is illegal'. It is far easier to get this across to young people than a rather nuanced argument about different types of the same drug being subject to different rules. Don't bother saying that under 18s would be barred from using even the weaker strains as nothing could be more guaranteed to increase use among that age group. Personally I'm amazed that people are still advocating liberalisation given the large number of cases of psychosis amongst teens in recent years. From what the schools have told us strong and effective action by the police such as tracking unusual energy use in properties has significantly reduced supply and cases of serious health harm to schoolchildren as a result of drug use peaked in about 2011 and have since fallen significantly. |
