I am a great fan of the Sunday market off Dukes Meadows. The fish is beyond compare, the apples tastier and cheaper than you will get elsewhere, and the honey delicious and local. But recent weeks have seen an increased number of stalls competing in the same product category for a finite consumer's purse. This was so obvious today I asked why and was told that, following a survey, people wanted a 'Borough Market' here. Only problem is, the site is too small, it's out of the way, and only open for a couple of hours a week. I applaud the desire to increase the number of stalls but could we have non competitive diversity? If not, I think we will suffer in the long term as stall holders withdraw because trading there no longer makes economic sense. |
