They hear their contemporaries earning millions in bonuses alone and wonder why they can't earn as much, I suppose. The point is they chose to go into government, they knew the salary and the rules. There are some extremely bright and capable people who go into teaching, nursing etc and most of them don't go trying to get extra money - although of course there was the story about how NHS consultants moonlight privately for thousands every year...I don't think paying MPs more would make any difference at all. I think all MPs should have to have held a 'proper job' for a few years before they go into parliament but that they should not be able to have outside jobs either during their tenure as MP, or even afterwards if it is any way related to the work they did as ministers. |
