See a Doctor - ideally a Specialist! In line with Michael's suggestion, I once "sprained" my ankle playing football. It swelled up very badly the next day, so a Nurse I knew said I should go to A&E after work (just in case). Went along to Barts, the two medics I saw visibly lost interest when I explained how it happened ("self-inflicted"), bandaged it up, gave me some painkillers and advised me to "rest" it. It was six months before I could even run for a bus, but I eventually got back to playing sport, skiing etc. Fast forward 5 years or so, I hurt it again, but this time went to a Doctor specialising in Sports injuries. He thought I'd sprained it again, but just to be on safe side, he took an X-Ray. There was no fracture this time, but he asked me how/when I'd broken my ankle previously. I was puzzled, but when I described the earlier incident, he was able to pinpoint that as having caused a fracture. I was lucky that the exact location and type of fracture was such that it (effectively) re-set itself, but it might have been much worse. Moral of the story? Don't trust in self-diagnosis and don't let busy doctors fob you off (Barts) - insist on a proper examination. Anther thought: if you do have a pre-existing medical condition - even a simple sprain - this could invalidate your Travel Insurance, even for seemingly non-injury related claims. Which is another reason for seeing a Doctor - if he/she signs you off as fit to travel, then this may protect you (though still read the small print carefully). Otherwise, it could just prove a very expensive holiday. (Hope this hasn't frightened off the OP, by the way.) |
