"I think the only case where a tax is levied on a tax" If you call duty a tax, there's 20% VAT on both fags and booze, which already carry substantial levels of duty. https://www.gov.uk/tax-on-shopping/alcohol-tobacco "If not, how can you be sure they haven't ?" It's anecdata anyway. The real picture is mixed: "We also have data on full-time wages by occupation. These show that wages of professionals have fallen in nominal terms in the last 12 months, by 2.1%. Wages of skilled trades, though, have risen 5.1%; given that employment of them has risen 6.1% this could be evidence that skill shortages are raising some wages. Wages of sales staff have gone up by 6.2%, although the numbers of them have fallen slightly. Since the Q1 2010 trough in employment, though, managers' pay has outstripped others, rising by 14.6% compared to an average of 6.6%. " http://stumblingandmumbling.typepad.com/stumbling_and_mumbling/2015/02/worker-flows-occupations.html So it depends in the area your friends work in. Manager or plumber, doing OK. Working professional, probably not so OK. |
