I had the pleasure of knowing Anne for many years beginning when her big blue car was parked in Rupert Road near the junction with Bath Road. It was beautifully and carefully painted with flowers, curling tendrils, birds, butterflies and poems. A wonderful hippy car. I stopped to admire it every morning when I took my dog for a walk. I was fascinated by its owner walking along the middle of Bath Road, holding a kettle, early every morning in defiance of the traffic, although there wasn't as much of it as there is now. One morning there were 5 geese waddling along in a line behind her with the 88 buses stopping whilst the retinue moved along. I called the police station to say that I was concerned for their safety and eventually a policeman on a bike came along but could find no trace of them. We met by her car one morning and had a nice chat. She said that she lived in Prebend Gardens but had been obliged to move her car. She clearly didn't want to say anymore so I just said that I was very pleased to see it in Rupert Road. Afterwards when we met she would sometimes tell me a little about her life. At other times she didn't want to talk about it or be questioned. One morning, to my dismay, the car had gone, so the dog and I went for an extended walk and found it in Prebend Gardens although there was no sign of Anne. Over the years I learnt that she had a piano and her mother wanted her to be a rich and famous concert pianist but although she loved her piano there came a point when she realised that she couldn't fulfill her mothers ambitions. She taught for some years but ŵas aware that most of her pupi's were there because their parents wanted them to be and their hearts weren't really in it. Her father left when she was young ,she had fallen out with her mother and she spoke briefly of a failed relationship. She was finding it difficult to make ends meet and one day bailiffs took her piano away. It was the worst thing that could have happened. It was her one true friend which required nothing from her and on which she could pour out her feelings. Never again would she be involved in close relationships or conform to what other people thought she should be doing or how she should be. She was a free spirit, an environmentalist and nature lover. She used to attend Chiswick Recycling Action Group meetings at the Town Hall and one evening she pushed her trolley along Town Hall Avenue which was lined ŵith filming vehicles, floodlights and the cast in period costume. Filming stopped and the astonished cast and crew stood there watching an extraordinary person wearing newspaper, feathers and plastic bags on her feet and bent double over a shopping trolley, refusing any help with getting it up the steps. She parked the trolley in the hall, went into the meeting room, put a notebook on the table and sat down. She produced a detailed survey of everŷ residence in her area (Prebend Gardens), showing what, if anything, was being recycled and percentages worked out. She accepted tea and biscuits at the end of the meeting and made her way back along Town Hall Avenue. The film crew were packing up. Another time one of my mothers carers took her daughter to see their GP at the Health Centre. Her daughter went to a toilet and suddenly an enormous pair of feet covered in feathers appeared under the door. She screamed and the back of her tight skirt split. Her mother assured her that a lady in fancy dress was playing a joke but she'd gone now so she could come out. They turned the skirt round so that the split was at the side, wrapped a scarf round it and went to the nearest charity shop, Cancer Research, to find something for the journey home. I last saw Anne on Sunday night in Bath Road near the bus stop outside the church. She was walking with great difficulty. I said hello but there was a strange look in her eyes. Was it despair or defiance? She indicated that she didn't need any help so I smiled, nodded and walked on feeling uneasy and wondering how much longer she could keep on. The following night she was hit by a lorry. Dear Anne. She made our lives so much richer and found fame in her own way by being herself. I console myself with the thought that she may not have known what hit her. I'm sure that her nature loving free spirit would be overjoyed if we look after her garden and hold an appreciative funeral. RIP Anne |
