The problem is not that "British shoppers" are "stupid", but that (some) BBC viewers are credulous. Even an elementary bit of Googling will reveal that daffodil poisoning occurs every year about this time, invariably amongst members of the Chinese community: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-17233766 (from 2012) The reason being that the leaves of daffs and narcissi which have not yet bloomed look very like those of Chinese Chives, which are a common ingredient in Chinese/Oriental cookery. And all the present hoohaa amounts to is advice by Public Health England that shops should not display daffs next to their fruit and vegetable stalls, to avoid any further problems: "It [PHE] noted 27 cases of poisoning linked to daffodils and narcissi last year [i.e. 2014]." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31176748 |
