I work in this building! It was re-developed about 20 years ago and was originally occupied by one company. It was partitioned into three about 5 years ago. The company I work for moved from the Barley Mow centre which is the old Sanderson wallpaper factory (the newer, black and white building opposite was their extension and was indeed designed by Voysey, I think the only industrial building that he designed or at least that is extant). I suspect that there was some pressure to make the new building in keeping with the surrounding buildings and it does indeed echo the Voysey extention to the Sanderson factory. I used to buy fish and game from Portch's when I first moved to Chiswick in 1980. I remember that they also had a stall on the High Road. They then moved to the corner of Devonshire Road and Ingress Street (Whete Strand Antiques is now) but never prospered. I think that their daughter ran the shop. They were taken over for a while by a fishmonger and deli run by a man called John whose surname I forget. He used to draw wonderful fish in chalk on the pavement leading to the shop. Belmont Road and Terrace take their name from Belmont House which was demolished in the 19thC. |
