Brendan, Ta - you are most kind. Of course, I apologise if I've misrepresented Iris' position. I think what she said was 'Yes I'd rather have a CPZ in theory, but in practice we would have fewer spaces, so be careful what you wish for..' Many abject apologies to her if she didn't in fact say it. I also agree with you (and the Traffic Dept) that double yellows at corners would make sight lines easier. Yes, they would and I curse their lack daily, but it's the infuriating rigidity of the traffic laws that appear to block any more flexible an approach, eg, have some double yellows where most needed but not elsewhere, etc.. Similarly, re: parking on pavements. If people couldn't park on the pavement in Fauconberg they couldn't park at all. A consistent comment from pro-CPZ proponents is 'You don't understand - it's different in MY road'. Having tramped almost every mean street in GP on many occasions, my view is that it's the same in almost every road without offstreet parking, but (at the moment) residents prefer the managed chaos of the present to the rigid solution of the future. It is possibly similar (though no doubt Thomas Barry, a man whose transport knowledge I respect, will correct me) to removing the crossings / traffic lights in Oxford Street / Exhibition Road - it requires give and take and concentration rather than prescription. The point is, most residents like it like that, and they DON'T like the idea and the actuality of the hideous 85 posts and bays, wardens and PCNs (£18,000 in fines for a 2-hr CPZ? Wha-aat?) in Park & Staveley. On the other hand, if they all change their minds, well then, in the words of Yossarian, I'd be a damn fool to say any different.. |
