Doing some back of the fag packet calculations, comparing the costs for station parking and an annual season ticket from, say, Maidenhead, to the petrol costs and an annual Zone1-3 ticket for someone driving in from Maidenhead and parking in Grove Park, I reckon that driving is about £1300 cheaper. This doesn't take into account other car running costs but people may not factor these in if they are using the car for other purposes anyway. As to providing commuter parking at Gunnersbury, I don't see why this should be any cheaper than station parking for a train commuter, so that would mean about £1200-£1500 annually. So how many people would go for that rather than free parking and a 10-15 minute walk? Additionally, I don't see why Hounslow should encourage people to commute into Chiswick anyway. If they did provide facilities, the price should be high enough to reflect the congestion and pollution impact caused by the commuter and that probably means the price should discourage the commuter. We are spending £15B on Crossrail so IMO every effort should be made to encourage commuting on that rather than the M4. |
