The young people of Greece did not create the mire that their country is in and I can fully understand the electorate voting for any party that will get them out of the mire sooner than the predicted 55 years.

The Greek 'civil service' was/is a joke with six days extra holiday every year for 'keyboard competency', three extra days for making a blood donation, two weeks extra holiday every year for having a basic competency of a foreign language.

Many civil servants simply 'convert' these extra days into cash payments as they are entitled to do. You also need to factor in the two weeks Easter bonus, two week Christmas bonus and the 'thirteenth' month bonus also paid at Christmas. These additional eight weeks of salary were introduced to keep basic salaries low and therefore the retirement pensions based on these salaries. However the salaries have increased significantly but the bonuses were left in place.

The bonuses can total more than the basic salary for a newly qualified teacher or nurse.

The source of this is not some rabid right-wing rag but Greek Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who has been trying since 2011 to have the payments stopped.

The Finance Ministry was singled out as paying, on average, €1000 in bonuses per employee per month. Their reaction to the threat of bonus withdrawal was to threaten strike action. This from a Ministry which has among the lowest tax takes in Europe from its citizens.

If unchecked, pensions will account for 12% of Greek GDP within thirty years (four times to average within the EU).

No wonder they are in such a ruddy mess.
