Hi Lynne.
Female Robin's are all brown whereas male Robin's have a red chest.
As you say Dunnock's are also known as Hedge Sparrows, not to be confused with the House Sparrow that used to be everywhere years ago but are now sadly in decline. If you compare the Dunnock to the House Sparrow they really do not look alike, the Dunnock's have a much thinner beak and are not so clearly striped.
