Question:

How would anyone, irrespective of whether they are in the public eye or not, feel about the police conducting a raid on their property? This could actually happen to individual in this country on the word of someone who makes an accusation, whether founded or unfounded.

To make matters worse this raid was carried out in full view of the TV cameras, with a helicopter filming the event which clearly showed inside the rooms where the police were rummaging through their possessions.

Not content with that, the BBC actually sent a reporter to Cliff Richard's home in Portugal (they were fully aware that he would be in Portugal at the time).

This raid was then shown as headline news LIVE on the BBC, which of course spread across the globe in minutes.

They have done immense damage to Sir Cliff's reputation and good name, but then it has been obvious for quite some time that they did not like his 'Squeaky Clean' image, and they did everything they could to delete his name from their playlists.

South Yorkshire Police should NEVER have entered into an agreement with the BBC over this matter. They stated at the Select Committee Meeting that they felt they had no option but to let them in on the raid, so they were in fact being blackmailed by the reporter who was aware of what was about to happen.

The BBC for their part then said, again at the Select Committee, that they would most certainly NOT have filmed the raid if they had been told not to by South Yorkshire Police!

South Yorkshire Police and the BBC most certainly do not come out of this in a good light. The BBC is supposedly there to report the news, not to make it up as they go along. A person's entire life can be ruined by something like this, yet the accuser is lying low, his anonimity protected by the law!

To think the BBC would stoop so low, and then have the audacity to expect to get an award from the Royal Television Society for acting like gutter press.

It has to be noted that some 5 months later Sir Cliff Richard has NOT been arrested or charged with any offence whatsoever. No doubt the BBC and South Yorkshire Police were hoping that there would be further accusations made against Cliff, so it is actually a non-story.

Perhaps the BBC are trying desperately to show themselves in a good light after their failure to do anything when it transpired that they had been working with many celebrities who later turned out to be paedophiles in the past

As for South Yorkshire Police, well it was a very convenient diversion to take the public's mind of their failure to deal with the abuse of over 1,400 children in Rotherham.

If the BBC ever get such an award from the Royal Television Society then it is a sad state of affairs for reporting news in this country and for the media in general.

This was a witch-hunt, or trial by media. Take your pick!
