There seems to me very little case to answer against the BBC for its TV news service and that on the radio. It is impeccably balanced and I couldn't begin to tell you the political sympathies of the main presenters. The online coverage does sometimes betray something of a left-wing bias but that is perhaps because the people who work on that service are younger and less experienced. Where bias is most pronounced is in light entertainment where there seems to be a homogeneity of views. Is it really the case that the majority of people who are witty and entertaining in this country are middle class, went to Oxbridge and have mildly left wing and very socially liberal views. Not saying people like this can't be funny as I think Jeremy Hardy for instance is hilarious but there are others who are less talented who seem to endure simply because their face fits. |
