Felicity, Given an opinion poll announced on radio over the last week indicated MPs are held in lower esteem than police and journalists, sadly reflects a poor state of mis-managed affairs by certain parts of society that were previously regarded as standard setters. Very little that comes out of the Parliamentary Committees shows their role as public watchdogs and ensuring accountability being the norm - Margaret Hodge's Public Accounts Committee and its attacks on tax avoidance being a rare exception. On your second point I agree the police's actions have done a lot to show taking a lead can make a difference. Sadly for every such success we have a Hillsborough, Rotherham and de Menezes due I am always left feeling down to certain poor leadership elements tainting their image. |
