The SYP created the circumstances for the BBC to do what they did. However, the BBC had choices. The fact is that Cliff had not been interviewed at that stage and didn't know the nature of the allegation against him. The BBC could have merely reported the raid, no pictures, no helicopter, no breathless reporter outside the flat, and no grinning reporter sent to Portugal on the evening. The BBC could also have left the story alone entirely unless there really was a story to report. Thousands of people are investigated by the police every day in the UK. Most of them never face charges. The fact is that there was no story that day, no public interest angle. Public interest is about the public needing to know, i.e if a suspect is considered a danger and so on. What the BBC went with is an angle of 'of interest to the public', a debatable point that is really about ratings grabbing rather than news. The BBC were at that flat before the BBC that day, they knew exactly what was going to happen. The only one who was unaware was Cliff. That is wrong. The BBC have compounded their actions with a litany of disgraceful actions since, each one clearly designed to look clever themselves and humiliate Cliff. The SYP have done terribly wrong in this, we shouldn't forget that, but the BBC have compounded the matter and should face the consequences of it. |
