I have to be honest – I can’t get angry with Thatcher about the Right-To-Buy scheme. This actually gave some people the opportunity to own their own home who would have never been able to otherwise; and is this really the reason for the shortage of social housing today? It may be a contributing factor but I’m not convinced that it is, or not a significant one; but it’s just my feeling – I couldn’t talk figures. Plus how many times over should a council flat be paid for in rent before someone else is entitled to own it, namely the person/families that have been paying the rent for, perhaps, decades? Perhaps I am being a bit naïve but I think Maggie’s heart was in the right place on this one; but if was no more than a political stunt, it still brought benefit to the working class who she is accused of destroying – by people like me! |
