I am not sure Thatcher created the desire to own their own homes amongst the average family but it was certainly a very popular move. The big mistake was not replacing the stock, even if it was on a one for two basis.But 'big government' is not a Tory philosophy. New Labour did not reverse the policy when they came to power btw but they did make it less attractive.They also did not build anywhere near enough houses during their 13 years.The policy has also given a larger swathe of the populaltion something tangible to pass on to their kids whether you agreed with the policy or not. |
