How times have changed for the worse Shelagh. To compare your experience with mine we were able to buy our first home in Staines. A small 2 bedroom Victorian cottage with a long garden in a lovely road. I was about 23 and working as a negotiator for a firm in Staines with a fairly average income. I was renting a room in Bedford Park for a few quid a week. My fiancée and I saved the 10% deposit on a purchase price of £10,250 with the Halifax. The maximum we were allowed on mortgage was 3x my income and half my fiancée’s. Mortgage monies were short in the early 70’s so we has to join the ‘mortgage queue’ but one day I was phoned by the Branch Manager to say we had reached the top that month so get your skates on lad and find a house to buy. All a bit of a push for us money wise but by no means unobtainable with careful management. Could I do the same today? Not a chance! |
