It's all about compromise and working out what is really important to you. When I added up my current communting costs + cost of living in West London, there wasn't actually an awful lot of difference in new commuting costs. And if I don't have a big holiday this year or upgrade the car, so be it. Perhaps I never bought into the 'you have to have it all' hype of the 80's and 90's. I don't know the answer, but sometimes you just need to work out what is best for you and your lifestyle. What I am buying is a beautiful house with clean air and space to breathe and if I can't afford to do anything if my disposable income drops at least I will have a lovely living space to spend time in! I suppose I am also fortunate that my profession is pretty flexible for location and always in demand so I don't have to work in London and there will be plenty opportunities around Beds, Herts and Bucks if I decide to change job. |
