"We do obsess with homeownership in this country, much to the bemusement of our European neighbours." I often hear this one trotted out, usually from older homeowners or those who are landlords themselves - who had the pure good fortune to have been born at a time that meant property was affordable when they came to buy. Often the people who most scoff at the idea of mass building of social housing or regulations and renters rights in the private rental market, which might at least make renting a more attractive option. I never hear this from 25-30 year-olds looking to start a family, who are currently spending 50 percent of their wages on rent, who are unable to save a deposit fast enough to keep up with a runaway property market, who will likely be working until 75, who will receive a pittance of a pension when they do retire and who are facing the possibility of a privatised NHS in their old age. Funny that. |
