Tell him to delete all the temporary internet files including cookies to cover all bases.

I'm not a computer expert by any means but I use a free programme called Advanced System Care which seems to work quite well. Included in that is the facility to check which programmes load when you start up your computer. You could get your son to download and run it and then check what loads on start up. A lot will be totally unnecessary and may be causing your problems. Even if not you'll find your computer starts up much quicker if you clear some start up programmes out.
