Well said Mark. However, on the issue of pay rises for general NHS staff in general it has to be remember that the very size of the payroll and because of the ring fencing of the NHS budget that there is a trade-off between staff salaries and service provision. Even a 1% rise will have to be funded in part by service cuts. My parents worked for the NHS and many members of my close family still do and they are complaining about declining standards of care and reduced budgets rather than pay and conditions. NHS staff did relatively well during the period of Labour rule and it was a credit to Tony Blair's government that this happened but it needs to be recognised that in the current environment that some hard choices need to be made. |
