| When we moved to Chiswick around 29 years ago, there were three butchers and a fishmonger in the High Road, and nearly every shop was a small independent (with the exception of Boots and Smiths). There was one small supermarket (Waitrose). Do we really want Chiswick High Road to become like every other homogeneous high street in towns across the country? I certainly don't! Only a couple of weeks ago there was small business Saturday, supported by long-standing businesses such as Mike at Top Hat dry cleaners. Devonshire Road and Turnham Green Terrace regularly have similar initiatives. Instead of wishing for more (foreign) chains, we should be supporting our local independent traders (who, incidentally, do not over-package their produce, reducing land-fill). |
