The BNI is a business networking group in which a group of traders get together and promise to mutually use and promote each other's businesses. At the meetings you have to report back on the recommendations you have given and the business that have been generated as a result of your recommendations and you get credit for any business generated.

It works well for some people but I know one local business person who left a chapter because he was under pressure to promote and use the services of a business of which he had previously had a bad experience.

In saying that people who are members of these networks should declare it, Andrew is being entirely reasonable and protecting the broader interest of people who use this forum. The only grinch or scrooge-like behaviour would be from any business, either directly or through a proxy, who sought to promote their business here in a slightly underhand manner without paying.
