I wish more stores would link up with the food banks so that customers can just put their donations in a collection bin...  and it would be good to know that no stores are still destroying food that they have not sold when it could be used.

Make sure that you know the difference between Best Before and Use By Dates - look at what the Food Standard Agency says on labelling and the updated info on eggs:

Please don't frighten people who can't afford to throw away food to throw it away just because you can afford to buy too much and don't manage it as well as you could!

I've seen too many carers who haven't a clue - and they are all someone's son or daughter.  Many of our children have not learnt any or enough food management skills at home or at school.
