I think you raise an interesting point, Adrian. With many words and spellings nowadays, once is not enough and exaggeration is the norm. Examples would be: The expression '110%'. Repetition of the word 'is' in phrases like, 'The problem is is that...' (very common in modern speech) The interjection 'err', which traditionally was always spelt 'er'. I make no comment on these changes, except to say that I find them interesting; a socio-linguist might be able to suggest possible reasons for them. |
